Happy Earth Day 2016!
It’s Earth Day 2016, so you know what that means, a post about how great being green is!
Happy Earth Day 2016 everyone!
Earth Day started back in 1970, before being green was hip. Back then, the most Earth-friendly businesses tended to be the organic co-op selling goat wool socks, and organic apples. It wasn’t easy to be green.
Thanks to Earth-Friendly technologies, such as renewable energy, being green is easier these days. Many organizations are taking the green philosophy seriously. Last year Greenpeace released a report which found that Apple is the most eco-friendly tech company in the world, thanks to its efforts in renewable energy.
This year, Apple is again the leading green tech company, focusing on a number of initiatives including recyclable packaging, and banishing mercury from their products. Apple is also currently running the “Apps for Earth” program. Until Sunday 24th April if you purchase any of the participating 27 apps, or make an in-app purchase in those apps, the proceeds will go to the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).
There are a wide variety of apps that you can purchase, such as Angry Birds and Star Wars Galaxy Heroes, but also apps such as a photo editing app Enlight. All you have to do is go to the App store and click on the banner “Combat Climate Change”, where you’ll find all of the participating apps. The apps also have extra features designed for the campaign, like this exclusive Ewoks bundle when you purchase Star Wars Galaxy Heroes:
To participate, head on over to the App Store and click on the “Apps For Earth” banner.
Can’t get enough of green apps? Check out these:
- Carbon Emissions Calculator – this calculator is perfect for those of you who travel by air, as it estimates your carbon emissions based on your air travel. All you need to do in the app is select your origin and destination, specify the class you’re traveling in, and the number of passengers. You’ll then receive an estimate of your carbon footprint.
- The Goodguide – want to put your money where your Earth Friendly mouth is? Download this app to gain instant access to information about environmentally friendly and safe consumer products such as food, toys, personal care and household products. All you have to do is scan in the barcode and the app pulls up information about the product based on scientific research and user ratings.
- Oroeco – this app gamifies battling climate change. It tracks what you buy, consume and activities you participate in, then shows the environmental impact of your decisions. You can then compare your results with other participants, and collect rewards and prizes for being a Climate Hero.
