Does Your Data Cloud Have A Green Heart?
How many top performing cloud based businesses are involved in environmental action? We decided to investigate…
“I was in my early twenties. I had the opportunity to sit down one on one with then Vice President, Al Gore in the White House. And he drew a picture of our planet on a chalkboard, and then he drew the atmosphere around it, and he said, this is the most important issue of our time. I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about,” Leonardo DiCaprio.
In the movie, Before the Flood, DiCaprio illustrates the gravity of global warming, refuting the argument that global warming is a natural occurrence rather than a human created phenomena.
According to NASA, the global temperature has risen about 1.1 degrees Celsius, the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctic have shrunk massively, Greenland has lost 150 to 250 cubic kilometres of ice each year between 2002 and 2006. The rate of sea level rise in the last two decades surpassed that of last century by double. Extreme weather events have been countless across the world.
During the forest fire which occurred in 2015 in Indonesia, the daily emitted carbon from the fire surpassed that of entire U.S. economy. In Indonesia, the forest is intentionally set on fire so that palm trees can be planted. Palm oil is one of the cheapest vegetable oils used for cooking, processed food, cosmetics, detergent etc. Since 2008, 21.5 million people have been displaced by weather-related disasters.
Ok, so it’s a big problem. But it’s not one that we’re powerless against. Businesses, in particular, have some power to make big changes, and the higher the profile, the bigger the contribution should be right? We were recently ranked among the Best Software Companies 2018 by G2Crowd under the category Top 50 Small Business. We decided to do some digging and find out which of our peers were also tackling the problem of global warming.
We checked the businesses in the Top 50 Small Business and Top 50 Mid- Market. We found businesses supporting social and humanitarian causes in their particular communities, such as MailChimp with its ‘Better, Weirder and More Human’ program to make Atlanta a great city. California based Balsamiq Studios donates to non-profit organisations which work in different areas. Burlington based Image Relay is a certified B Corp Company which works to alleviate poverty, address climate change, and build strong local communities and great places to work.
Canada based Elastic Email (Best Software Companies 2018 under the category Top 50 Small Business) collaborates with Ancient Forest Alliance and donates a percentage of its profits to help protect old growth forests around the world.
The sad thing is we could only come up with a small list of companies ranked in G2Crowd which are actively taking part in environmental action!
We at PieSync take social responsibility seriously, especially environmental responsibility. That’s why PieSync has joined forces with WeForest. Every time a new customer signs up for using PieSync’s cloud-based SaaS, we pledge to plant one tree in Khasi Hills in India. The customer gets a certificate as a recognition of the contribution. To date, we have planted more than 300 trees in Khasi Hills in India in conjunction with WeForest.

You may be wondering, being merely a start-up if we should take up this action. The early years of a start-up are never easy to engage in extraneous activities which are not directly related to survival. From constant product innovation to business development and marketing, the whole team remain busy in moving the start-up towards competitiveness. We at PieSync are aware of this harsh reality and hence we have transformed our awareness of climate change into one of PieSync’s core values and embedded into PieSync’s DNA. Whenever we see a new signup, we feel ecstatic knowing that another tree is going to be planted on this earth.
Climate change is real, so should be our actions to minimize the negative effects of it. When the next G2Crowd rank appears in 2019, we hope to see more businesses taking action against environmental destruction.
Let’s fight climate change together!
